Introducing
Equestrian Tai Chi for Instructors
An online course for Instructors to learn Equestrian Tai Chi, and to learn how to teach it to their clients.
Through your work with horses, you’ve come to know that horses have very uplifting energy, it’s wild and free, noble and dignified, yet caring and compassionate at the same time. You’d love to find a way of tapping into this energy and mixing with it.
Even more, you'd love to be able to offer your clients something unique and special, that would help them benefit from the therapeutic energy of the horse, and enhance their riding at the same time.
How would it feel to be able to give this experience to your clients?
Imagine, if as part of your lessons, you could let your horses and riders have a break from riding for 10 minutes?
This wouldn’t be just any break, it would be a time for them to relax and bond together, as they practiced the movements of Equestrian Tai Chi.
These gentle movements induce a flow of energy in the rider that can be sensed by the horse.
The movements also have a relevance to riding, they improve balance and posture, flexibility and feel, and promote security and stability in the saddle. More than this, practicing Equestrian Tai Chi softens the energetic boundaries between horses and riders, and opens them up to a deeper connection.
Equestrian Tai Chi for Instructors is an online course where you can learn how to provide this experience for your clients.
A little bit about me …
My name is Jenny Pim. I live in Ireland, in the country with my husband and our three boys, although they are not really boys now, two are in college and the youngest is midway through secondary school.
I’ve had ponies all my life and maybe like you, have always felt a special attraction to horses.
I’m not a riding instructor but I teach people Equestrian Tai Chi.
Equestrian Tai Chi is Tai Chi that I developed for practice on horseback. You may think this is a new fad, or something that has been thrown together quickly with no thought or structure, but nothing could be further from the truth.
I'm a certified Tai Chi Instructor registered with the Tai Chi Union for Great Britain. I've won silver medals in the British Open Tai Chi Championships. When I began to learn and teach Tai Chi, it led me to create Equestrian Tai Chi.
Over the years, I developed The Equestrian Tai Chi Form. It includes the energy flows of the regular Tai Chi Form, so that it has the benefits of regular Tai Chi. (When you see people practicing Tai Chi, they are actually practicing a sequence of movements in slow motion, known as The Form.)
Tai Chi and Equestrianism are natural partners:-
- There is even a Horse Stance in regular Tai Chi. If you are sitting on your horse and your horse is taken away, you will be in the Horse Stance of Tai Chi.
Another similarity to Equestrianism is that Tai Chi is always practiced with the knees slightly bent.
The back is always straight in Tai Chi, it does not always have to be erect. Again this is similar to Equestrianism (think the Jumping Position). - Equestrian Tai Chi is completely designed for practice on horseback, it allows your energy and your horse's energy to mingle and merge, and for your horse to be engaged in your practice.
What surprised me the most as I developed Equestrian Tai Chi, was how much horses enjoyed it when their riders practiced.
Once the horses got used their riders not holding the reins, and moving their arms around, they relaxed, and showed the common signs that horses show when they’re happy and relaxed, licking and chewing, resting a hind leg and dropping their heads.
I also noticed that they seemed more at ease and happier in themselves. Equestrian Tai Chi brings stillness to horses and riders, and it allows them to connect to a greater stillness that unites all things.
I created this course for Instructors, so that they could bring this peace and stillness to their clients and horses, while at the same time providing an activity that would complement and enhance their riding.
Equestrian Tai Chi is suitable for a broad spectrum of people, it can be taught to individuals or to groups of any age and to people with differing levels of ability and disability.
It is useful to teach Equestrian Tai Chi in the following situations:
1. It helps horses and riders relax before a ride, or after a ride.
When horses and riders relax before a ride, it helps them to bond and connect. This makes the riding experience more enjoyable for both the horse and the rider. Equestrian Tai Chi can be taught at anytime during the ride. When it is practiced at the end of the ride, it's a lovely finish to the ride for the horse as well as the rider. It rests and rejuvenates both of them
2. It helps nervous riders overcome their fear.
When riders practice Equestrian Tai Chi, it makes the energy flow in their bodies, and relaxes the parts that have become frozen with fear.
3. Tai Chi has been scientifically proven to help with many of our modern diseases and conditions.
Tai Chi has been scientifically proven to help with Autism, Dyspraxia, Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, Depression, High Blood Pressure and other conditions.
4. Equestrian Tai Chi is an activity that benefits riders with disabilities.
Equestrian Tai Chi, works on physical, emotional, mental and energetic levels. As well as stretching and lengthening muscles, other benefits include include improved balance, posture, coordination, concentration and flexibility. Equestrian Tai Chi increases confidence and improves one's general Well Being
5. It can help to relieve pain in joints and muscles.
Equestrian Tai Chi brings energy all through the joints in the body, helping energy to flow in them and bringing heat and healing to parts that need it.
6. It relieves stress.
Most people's lives are affected by stress. Prolonged stress has long term damaging effects on people's health. Tai Chi has been proven to relieve stress. When combined with the therapeutic energy of the horse as in Equestrian Tai Chi, the benefits of Tai Chi are magnified. It also helps to relieve some of the common problems associated with stress, such as insomnia.
7. It allows you to provide a safe and health giving activity for your clients that are unable to, or do not want to ride conventionally, but still want to enjoy sitting on a horse.
Equestrian Tai Chi compliments riding, and it shares common principles with it, major ones being that correct posture and a relaxed bodies are essential components. When riders practice Equestrian Tai Chi, they engage their energy bodies. This makes it easier for them and their horse to connect energetically. A deeper bond is made between the horse and rider as a unified energy field is formed between them. This way the riders benefits more from the therapeutic energy of the horse and it greatly enhances the time they spend with the horse.
This is some of the background to Equestrian Tai Chi:-
- I worked on developing The Equestrian Tai Chi Form for two years, using my Tai Chi training and 40 years plus riding experience.
- I regularly sought help and advice from my teacher Dr Alan Peatfield, a renowned Internal Martial Arts and Taoist teacher (Tai Chi is actually an Internal Martial Art, though it is mainly known now as a therapeutic practice).
- I spend three months writing the instructions for The Form.
- I then spent a further three months, testing these instructions on people of different ages, and different levels of physical and intellectual ability, checking and adjusting them as needed.
- They had to be easy to follow, and very precise, in order to make sure that the Chi or energy flowed correctly through the clients' bodies.
- I then worked with a Riding Instructor for 4 months, getting her to teach The Equestrian Tai Chi Form, and the method that I had developed for teaching to her clients. She only did this through the online course that you are about to learn through now, I never taught her in person.
I knew that I could teach Equestrian Tai Chi, because I was a Tai Chi Instructor, but could someone with little or no knowledge of Tai Chi, teach it effectively using my method and instructions?
This is what she said after the first class -
The horses relaxed, they licked and chewed, they lowered their heads, their eyelids were drooping, and some of them closed their eyes completely while the class was taking place.
When riding after Equestrian Tai Chi, the horses were much more relaxed, went in a better rhythm, listened more.
In some cases riders were more balanced. Younger animals were definitely more relaxed.
The riders said that whilst they were doing Tai Chi, they found it very relaxing, and they felt more confident in their horse. One of them said after her ride that “It was more even”. Another said he found his shoulders more relaxed.
Many of them felt tingling in their fingers and toes and pins and needles."
The movements of The Equestrian Tai Chi Form, open and develop the energetic pathways of the rider, and help connect the rider to their energetic centre.
It is much more than just physical movements, but it is the physical movements, that induce the flow of energy in the body.
I’ve been teaching Tai Chi since 2002, and I began developing Equestrian Tai Chi in 2005. I have taught many different types of people, for many years.
My interests now lie in teaching Equestrian Tai Chi, helping people to manage their fear of riding, and teaching special interest groups, such as those with physical and sensory disabilities and children with Autism.
Equestrian Tai Chi for Instructors is a training course for Instructors to learn Equestrian Tai Chi and to learn how to teach it to their clients.
Here is what you will learn in the course.
I created this course as a learning-teaching course, so that you could get into right away, without having to take months or years before you can begin to teach, or learning hundreds of complicated movements.
The main part of the course has three core modules. Each module includes Equestrian Tai Chi exercises for you to learn, and a Teaching Section with Weekly Lesson Plans for you to follow while teaching your clients. The course is designed for you to begin teaching, as soon as you feel proficient to do so.
In the main part of the course you will learn the First part of The Equestrian Tai Chi Form and Equestrian Chi Gung Exercises. The Equestrian Tai Chi Form is a sequence of movements performed in a flowing manner, while the Equestrian Chi Gung Exercises are single movements, that are repeated multiple times, they are generally symmetrical and are easy to learn. You will learn The Equestrian Tai Chi Form both on the right side and the left sides. The training videos are shown in mirror image to make it easier for you to follow along with them.
As well as the main part of the course with the three core modules, the course includes a second section where you can learn the rest of The Equestrian Tai Chi Form. This is for you to learn in your own time, and to develop your skill.
The second section also contains The Simplified Equestrian Tai Chi Form and simplified Equestrian Chi Gung exercises. This is useful if you are teaching people with Special Needs or people who find learning the regular Equestrian Tai Chi Form challenging.
There are two options available for joining Equestrian Tai Chi For Instructors.
Option 1: To join without the intent of becoming a Certified Equestrian Tai Chi Instructor.
The training material in the course is the same as for people who wish to become Certified Equestrian Tai Chi Instructors. There is also an option to send in videos for evaluation of yourself practicing Equestrian Tai Chi on horseback. You will receive written feedback on your practice and things to look out for and improve. This is purley an option that is available if you want it, you do not have to send in the videos
Option 2: To join with the hope of becoming a Certified Equestrian Tai Chi Instructor
If you would like to make teaching Equestrian Tai Chi a speciality, there is an option to become a Certified (by distance) Equestrian Tai Chi Instructor.
To be eligible for certification you will need to send videos of yourself practicing Equestrian Tai Chi on horseback. Six videos should be sent in all, within a year from the date of joining the course, ideally spaced about a month apart. Each monthly video should show continued improvement in your practice.
If at the end of your videos series, you demonstrate that you have practiced sufficiently to have enough skill and a good understanding of Equestrian Tai Chi, you will be Certified By Distance as an Equestrian Tai Chi Instructor, and will receive a downloadable certificate to indicate this, to be followed by a paper certificate (please allow time for postage). This certificate will remain valid for two years, after which you will be required to submit another video of yourself practicing, in order to keep your certification up to date. There will be a $50 administration fee for this at the time of issue. It will be required to re-certify every two years, and there will be a $50 administration fee for this every two years.

This is what Eileen sent to me very soon after joining the course ...
Clients began benefitting right away
Hi Jenny,
Just wanted to let you know that I am loving the Equestrian Tai Chi!
I tried out some of the very basic Chi Gung with my Special Olympics riders last week and they took to it like ducks to water!
One girl has improved so much in terms of posture, balance and confidence that she told me she is practising at home and finds the moves really relaxing.
Where I live the broadband cover is very poor so it takes ages to view the videos but they really help show the moves.
Looking forward to learning and sharing more.
Thanks for creating this course.
All the best,
Eileen Bennett

This is what Amy has to say. She's been teaching Equestrian Tai Chi for a number of years.
Equestrian Tai Chi is amazing! I took this class to enhance my teaching skills when working with disabled riders and it has been one of the best classes I’ve taken.
Equestrian Tai Chi is so gentle and relaxing it is beneficial to both disabled and able-bodied students. Many times I hear the rider simply wants a better connection to his/her horse and Equestrian Tai Chi is the perfect starting point for that!
This class has made a world of difference in how I teach and how the student learns. Equestrian Tai Chi forces the student to slow down and connect before riding which ultimately makes for a better rider. A relaxed rider = a relaxed horse.
My favorite part of teaching Equestrian Tai Chi is seeing how effective it is on the rider and on the horse. Everyone is more relaxed and happy!
The class itself is easy to follow and understand with detailed explanations of the moves along with photos and video.
The weekly lesson plans are a great starting point when you begin teaching. Each week flows into the next.
Jenny Pim is an amazing instructor! I cannot thank her enough for offering this class to the world. I highly recommend Equestrian Tai Chi for both therapeutic and non-therapeutic riding instructors. It has truly been a career changer for me!
